PROBLEM 4 - ARCHITECT

GRADE 4 - Vicky Heritage

Step 1:You are an architect designing floor plans for new model homes.

Create as many main floor plan options as you can to offer to new buyers.

Each home has to have a perimeter of 36 meters and include at least 2 rooms (make them a realistic size, buyers will have to be able to fit furniture and appliances in).

Also include a staircase of your choice.

Step 2: Print your floor plan when you are done. Add your perimeter calculations onto it.

EXTENSION

As home buyers, people want to know the area of the homes they are looking to buy.  For each floor plan you have printed, try to figure out the area. We will be taking these up as a class.

Helpful Hints:

-Make sure you are using a metric measurement unit (units can be changed at the bottom of your screen).
-Keep the scale in mind. Notice the scale. The length of two grid boxes is equal to 1 meter.
-Feel free to use the catelog option to add in counters, appliances and furniture to make sure they fit.

  1. This is a great website what a fun way to work with perimeter.

  2. This program could result in students getting carried away with the design instead of the dimensions. You would have to set really clear rules prior to beginning this activity

  3. This activity was so fun!! It really allows the students the abilityv to tap into a creative element while doing math. This just goes to show that even the child that struggles with math concepts can enjoy and succeed in what they are doing...even in math---math is fun!!

  4. great activity. I would allow students to explore their creativity first. Let them build their ideal bedroom for instance, and then have then calculate the perimeter needed of the room to fit all their furniture.

  5. This activity was AWESOME. Being able to visualize and play with numbers virtually was very effective and I was able to experiment must faster with various measurements to get the intended perimeter. I broke down the numbers and that helped me to make perimeters. I had a little difficulty getting the length of the room to exactly 12m but I figured you get the gist. Very cool virtual tool, when recording the various perimeter measurements, you can either print out each room or draw them and bring the virtual into reality. LOVE IT
